Color Gradation Work

This year I started my internship for my Montessori Certificate. I am so excited to be in the classroom and to start implementing all that I have learned in my Child Development courses and my Montessori classes. Part of my Montessori internship requires me to create monthly work for the classroom. I get really into creating work. I found this work idea on Pinterest. It is called Color Matching Gradation. I think of it as an extension to Color Box III. The basic idea of this work is to match the colors according to their gradation. Gradation can be a very challenging concept for the preschool child, so this work can help scaffold the child by providing a control of error.

Here is what it looks like on the shelf.

To make this work, you need these supplies: paint samples, wooden cubes, tape, scissors, and a tray.  I went to Home Depot for the paint samples and picked out nine colors that match Color Box III.  The wooden cubes came from Hobby Lobby, and were really my only expense to make this work. I think it was $3.99 for 24 cubes. I cut the paint samples into 2" stripes to use as the matching chart. Next I cut the left over paint samples into squares to tape on top of the wooden cubes. And wah lah! A cute and fun work for sensorial! I have found that this work is excellent for three and a half year olds.  It keeps them focused for an extended period of time, it develops their visual sense, and even strengthens their fine motor skills.

After the cubes are matched.

Spring Hats

Spring is coming!  You know what that means, warmer weather, spring clothes, and spring sales!  I am going to be on the hunt for a good deal on a floppy sun hat.  They are too cute to resist!   It is hard to make the transition from Fall to Spring.  We have to put away all those lovely scarves, sweaters, and boots and bring out the wedges, shorts, and sandals. Then we also have to start shaving more often. Ugh.  It can be hard.  But with the right outfits, a little fun, and a LOT of shopping, this time of year can be really cute.  Here is my take on Spring Fashion this season.  Tell me what you think. Disclaimer, I am not a super trendy person.  This look was an attempt at high fashion and super trendy items.  So basically don't laugh at me.  Well, maybe you can just a little.

High waisted shorts are very in right now.  However, it is hard to know what to pair them with.  I found this pair of DKNY high waisted shorts at Macy's on sale for $24.99 originally $70.  I love this teal color.  They are unique and springy.  To show off the waist line a bit I bought this crop top from Target for about $10.  It is a perfect top for high waisted shorts or skirts.

The shoes: I found these short booties at Famous Footwear for $45, originally $100.  They have little cut outs on the side, so they have nice detail. My necklace I got from Forever 21 for $10 or so.  I love statement necklaces and this one was too unique to pass up.  I only buy trendy jewelry at Forever 21 because although I love Nordstrom trendy jewelry is well trendy and thus goes out of style quickly.  You can find the same necklace at Forever for half the price.

The hat (my favorite part of the outfit) is my step moms. She let me borrow it.  Actually I took it without asking.  So I hope she doesn't mind.  I think hats are a big commitment, but they can completely take a look to a whole new level.  I'm trying not to laugh in this photo, so its okay to laugh at me here.

Fall in San Diego

So I know this post is a little late...more like a whole season late, but Emily came and visited me in the Fall in San Diego.  We put a couple cute outfits together for the fall.  San Diego weather is perfect for boots, scarves and dresses/skirts, which happens to be some of my favorite items to put together.  Check out my Fall San Diego look!

Tan Cardigan: Nordstrom $38 -- Absolutely worth every penny!  A staple to my wardrobe!
Tribal print Scarf: Nordstrom $12
Black Skater Skirt: Nordstrom $28
Brown Suede Boots: Emily's closet -- Thank you Em

Popular Trend: Stripes

This look is fun for a casual day for errands, shopping, or just hanging around.  I am in love with stripes right now!  I found this shirt at J. Crew for $20. It is light grey with white stripes.  The top of the sleeves have three gold buttons, which sadly you can't see here, but I think it adds a lot to the top.   I  added a chambray shirt from Old Navy, black jeans, and tan booties.  To add some accessories I paired a dark grey scarf and a coral watch for a pop of color.  What do you think? Pretty cute right!

Color Break ( Mint, Lavender, and J Crew)

Smiles :)
Senior Portrait Look-a Like
Although I love black, occasionally I need to break out of my comfort zone and throw some mint and lavender into my wardrobe. Add a beautiful fall landscape and these colors really come alive. Again I paired the inexpensive outfit with some classy J Crew Shoes. My mom bought these for me as a "Shopping Therapy" trip after a bad break up. HEY, sometimes Mom's just know how to make you feel better.
Mint Sweater- ANGL ($24)
Articles of Society Jeans- Nordstrom
Lavender Necklace- Charming Charlies ($8 Originally $20)
Grey Swede Flats- J Crew ($128)

Fall at the Cliffs

This post is to mostly show off my Ivanka Boots..Yes they were pretty expensive but well worth the price. These boots make a plan outfit look classy. Don't forget when you buy a pair of swede boots to use a swede protector before wearing them out in questionable weather. You will ruin them if they get wet! I used UGG's product.
Ivanka Trump Swede Rider Boots-  Macy's ($100 Originally $300)
Winter White Sweater- Forever 21 ($14.99)
Textured Tights- Target ($6.00 Originally $8)
Black Mini- H & M ($5)
Pink Pendant Necklace- Forever 21 ($4.99)
Grey Head Band- Forever 21 ($6.99)

Montessori Training Week 3- The Prepared Environment

If you have ever seen a Montessori classroom, then you have noticed that it is very different from any other type of classroom.  There are no toys, no blocks, no manipulatives; there were probably no bright bulletin boards on the walls.  There were all these materials on neatly organized shelves.  You probably wondered, "what in the world do the children do all day in this classroom???"  In this post I will be explaining what exactly a Montessori classroom looks like, why it is so crucial to the Montessori philosophy, and why it is so special!

Just a little bit of background, the Montessori classroom was specifically designed to meet the needs of the child.  Maria Montessori called this the prepared environment.  This prepared environment has natural lighting, soft colors and organized spaces for different centers. It is an extension of the home, including paintings on the walls conveying a homelike feeling tone. The materials in a prepared environment are easily seen and accessible, fostering independence as children can easily choose what they want to work on.  Everything has a place inside of the prepared environment, achieving a sense of harmony and order.  The prepared environment is set up to encourage free choice. It has child sized desks, sinks, toilets, chairs, and shelves.  This encourages autonomy. The prepared environment becomes the teacher, so that the teacher can take a step back and become the observer.  The teacher will scaffold and aid the child in their learning, but it is truly the environment, the classroom, that the child learns from.

In the Montessori philosophy, there are three components that are crucial to a true, successful Montessori classroom.  The components are the child, the teacher, and the environment.  One cannot have a true Montessori classroom with one of these pieces missing.  The child is responsible for their learning.  They are independent and guide their own learning.  The teacher encourages this by making the environment interesting and appealing to the child's needs.  The environment teaches the child.

So what in the world does this prepared environment look like? It fosters independence and discovery, but what does that mean you, might ask? Well let me tell you!  The prepared environment is beautiful.  It should look appealing to the children.  They want to touch the work, because they are intrigued by it.  The prepared environment allows for freedom.  Freedom to move, freedom to explore, freedom to develop a child's social interactions.  It has structure and order, providing harmony for the child.  The classroom should appeal to the child, facilitating learning.  There should also be nature inside of the classroom.  Another component of the prepared environment is the Montessori materials.  These materials are crucial to the classroom.  Each material or piece of work serves a specific purpose.  They are unlike toys or manipulatives, because they develop a very specific skill to the child.  Manipulatives on the other hand can be used to teach different things; they can be manipulated.  Montessori materials cannot, because they were created specifically for one or even a few ideas in mind.  The last component of the prepared environment is the community.  The community in the prepared environment is the mixed age groups.  Each child can experience being the youngest, middle, and oldest child. Each serves an important lesson to the child.

That was a quick summary of the prepared environment.  Here are some pictures of some beautiful prepared environments.  Please share if you have anything else you would like to add to this topic!  Or if you have any ideas about your classroom you would like to share!

Montessori Training Week 1: The Start of It All!

Just a little update on my life...  I have mentioned before that I am in the process of completing my Montessori Certificate.  I have finished my curriculum portion of the training.  So I have all of my albums for Practical Life, Sensorial, Math, and Language completed. YAY!  I am very proud of them.  Right now I am still in school to finish my Bachelor's degree in Child and Adolescent Development. Consequently, I cannot start my practicum portion of the training until January. However, I am attending weekly classes on the Montessori Philosophy, Classroom Leadership, and Cultural Subjects.  I thought I would give some weekly updates so I can share what I am learning with you.  I have such a passion for the Montessori philosophy and I can't think of a better way to share the Montessori Method.

Maria Montessori was an Italian woman who grew up with a strong desire to become well educated.  She was the first woman to attend and graduate from Medical School.  The two most influential philosophers in her life were Jean Itard and Edward Segund.  From Jean Itard she took the idea about the different sensitive periods of the child, which is the idea that a child is more receptive to learning something at very crucial times in his or her development.  Edward Segund was the first to believe that mentally challenged children had some sort of illness in their nervous sytem.  He believed certain organs in the child were not communicating with the nervous system properly, and in order to wake them up, the children needed to have stimulation through their senses.  Montessori took both ideas, the sensitive periods and the sensory stimulation, and put them together to develop her philosophy.  This is what is so crazy to me.  Everything in the child development world concerning special needs children is about sensory integration.
Montessori got it so long ago!  She was an amazing thinker.

Montessori spent the first part of her career working at a psychiatric hospital in Rome.  There she carefully observed children with special needs.  She observed these children taking notes and writing down everything that she saw.

Beautifully prepared environment!
Maria Montessori opened her first Children's House, called Casa Dei Bambini, for underprivileged children in Italy. She had developed materials for the classroom when she was working with children with special needs.  She thought she would try how typical children would handle these materials.  She would set up the classroom and observe what choices the children made. Taking notes about what the children liked and what the children did not like.  If something needed to be fixed or changed, she would adjust it.  This is where the Montessori Classroom became so crucial.  The "prepared environment" within in the classroom becomes the teacher.  The children learn not through the teacher, but through their environment which their teacher has set up for them.  A true Montessori classroom should be set up in such a way that the children can function and learn without any help from the teacher.  The teacher is there for guidance and scaffolding, but the environment is the true teacher.

Through observation Montessori realized that the children were industrious.  They liked to sweep, to clean, to do work.  They were happy to do it.  They began to take pride over their environment.  The children looked after one another and worked as one social group.  Another observation Montessori made was that the children began to repeat an exercise over and over.  She noted that they enjoyed doing it.  It was not the end product that they sought, but the process of completion was what attracted them to the exercise again and again.  An example I like to use is when an adult is at the beach.  When he digs a hole, he digs it as fast as he can, because he wants to be able to say he completed the task.  A child, however, when digging the same hole will take their time, enjoying the sand, the shovel, maybe even some water that comes into the hole.  As soon as the child is done with that hole, they will start to dig another.  It is amazing how children love to repeat things.  Montessori believed that they would keep choosing an exercise because they have not learned everything they possibly could yet from that exercise.  They will keep making that choice until one day they are done with it.  They will have gotten everything they can from that exercise, and then they will be ready to move on to something new.

After Montessori started Casa Dei Bambini she travelled the world teaching the Montessori Method and educating those who were interested in hearing.  Throughout Europe, Montessori was highly appreciated.  However, in the USA her movement didn't catch on.  Montessori was actually highly frowned upon until the 1960s or so when Nancy Rambusch began the American Montessori Society.  It is unlike any other early education philosophy and I look forward to share more of what I learning during my training with you!

21st Birthday Look

This is the outfit I wore for Emily's 21st Birthday.  It was perfect for any type of party really. I got the top and skirt from Nordstrom.  Something I love about Nordstrom that most people don't utilize much is their customer service.  They take pride in their customer service.  So if you have an awesome shirt or some unique bottoms that you aren't quite sure how to wear, bring them with you when you shop at Nordstrom.  Their fashion consultants are there to help you!  They work partly off of commission so they want to help you!!!   Also, they offer a completely free service that I don't think most people take advantage of. If you call Nordstrom ahead of time you can make a free styling appointment.  They will ask you some basic questions to figure out what price range you are interested in spending and what you are looking to buy.  Then you come into the store at an appointed time and you will get a completely FREE personal shopper and stylist.  Nordstrom is your friend!

Okay enough praising Nordstrom. For this outfit I wore a sheer black tank.  It was from the TopShop Department in Nordstrom.  I purchased it on sale for $12.  The skirt I wore is a black body con skirt that is accented with gold chevron print. It is also from Nordstrom, BP, $34. I wore a gold necklace and a black cuff bracelet.  My heels are black suede peep toe from Charolette Russe, $10.

21st Birthday Party - Peacock Theme

For Emily's 21st Birthday we wanted to throw a fun, classy, (cheap), party.  We were able to host the party at our friend's beach house.  The party theme was peacock.  We decided that this would be a classy (not trashy) 21st birthday, so we kept the decorations simple and the food classic. Here is how we threw this party!

For the main decorations, we used the colors hot pink, teal, and black.  Not your usual peacock inspired colors, but it went so cute together. I went to Hobby Lobby for most of the party decorations. I used their coupon code online to buy a lot of the items for a discounted price.  Hobby Lobby is the place to go for cheap crafts.  They always have a coupon online and they rotate their sales in store weekly.

I got peacock feathers and two daisy flowers, making a little bouquet in a mason jar (is there any other way to make a flower arrangement??) I wrapped a little bit of lace around the jar and tied it with a teal ribbon.

To really make the decorations cute, but affordable, I made a banner.  It reads, "Happy 21st Birthday Emily."  For the flag banner, I cut triangles out of black paper.  Then I used a peacock design paper to cut out the letters.  I also drew a couple of peacock feathers to jazz it up a bit.  To attach the flags to the twine, I used a hole puncher and strung the flags through the twine.  Helpful hint: tape the flags to the twine so they don't move around in transport or when they are hanging!

For the food, we had a veggie platter and spinach dip with sourdough bread. The bread was from Boudin's which is Emily's favorite place for bread! People ate it up!

Lastly, the CAKE!  You cannot have a birthday party without the cake.  Kelsey, our dear friend, had this idea and was in charge of the cake.  It is called a Trashed Barbie Cake.  They are all over Pinterest.  But basically you take a barbie/doll and destroy her clothes/hair/makeup and place her on the cake.  It is perfect for a 21st Birthday Party!

I would like to take this time to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILY!  I hope you enjoyed your party!  It was classic Emily: sophisticated, flirty, and fabulous!  Please share if you have any good 21st birthday party ideas!

Amazing Party Dress Find

A while ago I had a wedding to go to.  Emily and I decided to hit up the mall, but agreed that we wouldn't try on anything that was over $20. Challenge accepted.  We began digging through the sales racks at Macy's.  Emily found this absolutely gorgeous dress.  It was marked down to $40.  However, I made an exception to the rule, because it was truly amazing.

We did a price check and it was marked down to $14.95, original price you might ask? $120!  I tried it on and it fit perfectly!  One of the best deals that I have ever found.  See post about this outfit on our Outfit Inspiration Board.
